Customer Convenience Sells

Customers want convenience. Customers will pay for convenience. Walk through the supermarket and you will see foods packaged for convenience, including still-hot, roasted chickens ready for the table.
Drive-through windows emphasize customer convenience. Starbucks, banks, drug stores and many drycleaners employ them. These conveniences pay off. The average Starbucks with a drive-through has average daily sales of $5,500 compared to $3,500 for locations with no drive-through.
If I were starting or building a business where customers come and go quickly, I would look for a location that would allow a drive-through window. Increased customers would offset higher rent. I have talked with many business owners who have increased sales using drive-through windows.
Drive-through windows aren’t the only way to offer convenience to customers. A contractor should offer evening and Saturday appointments for bidding jobs. A wise dentist will offer evening hours to accommodate patients’ schedules. I set appointments with clients in the east as early as 5:00 am because it is 8:00 am their time. While I prefer to start appointments later, I schedule to accommodate my customers. Sometimes a client needs to change an appointment. While I can’t always meet a specific time request, I can offer options. Yesterday, two clients asked me to reschedule their times. I had blocked time in a few days for writing. I was able to reschedule both appointments into that time slot, and use their original appointment times for my writing.
Customer service is an attitude. It is a trap to believe that our products and services are so wonderful that our customers exist to serve us. Instead, we must understand that we are servants to our customers. The Lord said, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:28, NIV) We need to follow the Lord’s example and serve our customers.
In addition, we need to adjust to their needs with a good attitude. Paul reminds us of this when he wrote, “Do everything without complaining or arguing.” (Philippians 2:14, NIV) Meeting a customer request with grumbling kills any goodwill you may have earned.
Look for new and innovative ways to sell services to customers. Capitalize on customer convenience and watch your business grow.

Be Well- Informed On Your Product Line or Service

Being well-informed and understanding your products and services is the key to generating sales. King Solomon wrote, “Take my instruction, and not silver, and knowledge rather than choicest gold.” Proverbs 8:10 NASB)
A salesperson selling suits needs to understand different fabrics—how they wear, look, and hold up after many dry cleanings. Additionally, the best salespeople understand the differences in various manufacturers’ products. For example, some jackets will fit better on people who are long-waisted; others are tailored to fit customers who are fit and trim; and others are designed for plus-size people. The best clothing salespeople know their product lines so well that they can immediately steer customers toward the right style and fit for them.
Steel salespeople need to command a clear understanding of the different types of steel, and how slightly changing the alloy can alter the strength, cost, and properties of the product. A strong knowledge base establishes credibility with customers and allows a salesperson to build trust and close sales.
Look back at your own experience as a shopper. How have you responded when a salesperson held a firm grasp of the product and answered each question carefully and completely? Knowledge is the difference between a salesperson and someone who just takes orders. So build your own knowledge and the knowledge of your colleagues who are interacting with customers.
If you’re supervising a sales staff, develop a system whereby they learn a bit more each day about your product or service. You may have a deeper understanding, and the more you can teach and impart that knowledge to your staff, the more successful your sales efforts will be. King Solomon also wrote, “How blessed is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding.” (Proverbs 3:13 NASB) Be the one with understanding and wisdom and your customer service will shine.

Alstom to establish a hydro Global Technology Center in China

Alstom Renewable Power, Alstom's division in charge of renewable power generation equipment and services, plans to establish a Global Technology Centre in Tianjin, China, as part of its $126.6 million investment announced in November 2010 to upgrade Tianjin's hydro industrial facility and support its hydro business growth in China.
With the addition of the new GTC to Tianjin facility, Alstom Hydro China will become a full value chain entity with a wide array of activities, ranging from R&D, sales & marketing, engineering design, sourcing, manufacturing, project management, installation maintenance and service.
Tianjin technical center will adopt the common platform for product development in use across all Alstom's Hydro R&D facilities around the world. Through effective international collaboration and with the support of local service centers in 100 countries, the Tianjin GTC will be able to better meet the needs of Chinese and global markets and to develop local R&D expertise.
Combining global experts and skilled local engineers, the new GTC has already started its R&D activities, which include hydraulic, mechanical and electrical research and development and turbine scale model tests. An additional laboratory with a test stand, enabling the model testing of hydraulic designs for Francis and Kaplan turbines is scheduled to enter operation in summer 2013.
China is the largest hydro market in the world. According to Chinese government estimates, the Chinese hydro market is expected to grow by over 65 percent from 2011 to 2020 to reach an installed capacity of 380 GW — the equivalent of about 17 Three Gorges hydroelectric plants. By the end of 2015, China's production of hydroelectricity is expected to reach 910 billion kWh, hydropower being the highest priority source of renewable energy in the country.
Alstom is a supplier of hydropower generation equipment and systems in China with around a 20 percent share of the Chinese large hydro equipment market. The company has been supporting the development of China's hydropower industry ever since the establishment of Tianjin Alstom Hydro, Alstom's first manufacturing site in China, 17 years ago.
Alstom has directly contributed to many of China's major hydro projects, such as the world's largest power plant, Three Gorges (14 x 700 MW units), Li Yuan (4 x 600 MW units) and Xiangjiaba (4 x 800 MW units). With over 800 MW, the turbines designed, engineered and installed by Alstom for Xianjiaba are the world's largest hydro turbines ever designed and manufactured to date.

Shell pulls out of bidding war for Cove Energy

By Dorothy Davis

Dutch oil major Shell has dropped out of the nearly half-year bidding battle against Thai rival PTT Exploration & Production for the coveted acquisition of Cove Energy.Shell Bidco, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS.A) (NYSE: RDS.B) has announced it would not be participating in a final auction for control of oil and gas exploration company Cove Energy. The surprise move follows a nearly half-year battle against rival bidder PTT Exploration & Production that effectively positions the Thai-based upstart as winner of the coveted acquisition.

The tug of war for Cove has been primarily fueled by the company's position in East Africa, one of the world's most promising new gas resource areas. At the center Cove’s properties is its 8.5% stake in a Mozambique license that could serve as a regional foothold for the export of liquefied natural gas into the Asia market.
Dutch oil major Shell entered its initial bid in February at 220 pence per share, followed by an unexpected and aggressive counter offer of 240 pence per share by PTT in May. Since then the two companies have been locked in a fruitless and tense bidding stalemate.
On Friday, British acquisitions regulator the Takeover Panel announced it would mandate a formal auction process if current offers were not declared final by 1600 GMT Monday. Shell’s announcement to abstain from the auction followed Monday morning.
“Shell Bidco has today decided not to revise its offer of 220 pence in cash for each share of Cove, and not take part in the auction procedure for Cove," Shell said in a statement.
Cove’s shares suffered a 13 percent drop following Shell’s announcement to sit at 238.5 pence, just below PTT’s offer of 240 pence per share or $1.9 billion.
Analysts have said Shell could find other points of entry into the prized East Africa region through deals with Anadarko or ENI, which both have stakes in Mozambique.

Aker Solutions invests $100m in new drilling equipment facility in Brazil

Aker Solutions is building a new multi-purpose service site for its drilling equipment business in Brazil, significantly expanding its capacity to serve the country's fast-growing drilling market. The $100 million development will also include substantial production, assembly and testing capacity, to provide local content to support the country's large drilling rig-building programme.
The 335 000m2 facility in Macaé on Brazil's east coast is about 8 times bigger than Aker Solutions' current facility in nearby Rio das Ostras, reflecting expected growth in the company's activities in the country. "Our investments in Brazil demonstrate our ambitions to grow in one of the most exciting offshore markets in the world, and our commitment to contribute to and develop the country's oil and gas industry. Aker Solutions' commitment to local content in Brazil is second to none," says Luis Antonio Araujo, Regional President for Aker Solutions in Brazil. The new Macaé facility will host full drilling riser production and maintenance services. This includes about 20 000 m2 of indoor mechanical workshop space for riser and topside equipment, with full crane and testing capabilities. The total investment is about $100m. The site will have capacity for about 700 employees.
Well positioned
The site will also include a state-of-the-art training centre with capacity for up to four of Aker Solutions' market-leading drilling simulators. The company today has two state-of-the-art dome training simulators in operation, offering customers training support to improve the safety and efficiency of drilling operations.
"We are well positioned to take advantage of the activity in Brazil's oil and gas industry. The new site will enable us to produce and assemble drilling equipment in Brazil, as well as conduct service and performance optimisation work on a steadily growing fleet of deepwater units with Aker Solutions equipment on board," says Gustavo Gonçalves, head of Aker Solutions' drilling technologies business in Brazil.

Local support
Aker Solutions has supported drilling operators locally with equipment, systems and services since the 1990s. Today, more than 35 drills ships and rigs operate in Brazilian waters, using drilling equipment from Aker Solutions.
Work to preparing the land has already started and the site is scheduled to be fully operational in early 2014.
The site in Macaé, 180 km northeast of Rio de Janeiro, will be Aker Solutions' fourth facility in Brazil, in addition to sites in Rio das Ostras, Curitiba and Rio de Janeiro. The Rio das Ostras site, which currently hosts Aker Solutions drilling riser production and drilling lifecycle services and subsea lifecycle services, will be developed into a full service subsea product base.
