Malaysia: first compressed natural gas tram in the world will be ready next year

As a result of an agreement signed between the train maker Mrails International Sdn Bhd and the chief minister Haji Mohd Ali bin Mohd Rustam, the state of Malacca will open the world’s first tram powered by a CNG engine in May 2012. Designed in compliance with United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to combat global warming, this vehicle will revolutionise the locomotive industry without affecting the environment, said Mrails president and managing director Datuk Jeya Kumar.
The tram corridor will begin from its station adjacent to the Ayer Keroh Toll plaza heading to the Heritage Town of Melaka with a distance of 40 kilometres covering eleven out of fourteen major tourist hot spots. "This represents our vision to take part in the state’s growth as an ultimate destination centre for tourism, and marks our commitment to creating sustainable transport systems," added Kumar.
“The Next Generation Tram” is a rail borne vehicle, lighter than a train and differs from other forms of locomotion, as the tracks are embedded in the street. It has a capacity to accommodate 120 passengers at one time, has ground-level design and will operate at speeds of 40 km/h. The service will be free for the disabled and students, reported Malaysian National News Agency Bernama.
Mrails International will design, construct, finance, operate, maintain and supervise the road tramway and tramcar operations for 25 years. The company -which intends to export the project to other cities in the country as well as overseas- expects initially a 40,000 ridership daily.
